Hypnosis – Unraveling The Mysteries Behind It

Hypnosis and its subset, hypnotherapy, have always been steeped in myths. Some consider them to be some sort of spell while others refuse to even recognize their existence. Given below are some common beliefs prevalent about hypnosis, and the real truth behind them.

Hypnosis has nothing to do with magic spells of any kind. Psychology and several other scientific disciplines have a critical role to play in the hypnotic procedure, and it is very easy to imbibe and practice. People refuse to believe in hypnosis even after seeing participants effectively undergoing it in public sessions. They argue that those who can be hypnotized are somehow weak mentally. But this again is a complete distortion of truth. Hypnosis can be exercised on anyone regardless of his or her mental strength.

Another myth is that hypnosis is an alternate state of consciousness, which again is a big misconception. A hypnotized individual is totally conscious of his environment. That individual is just in a relaxed state where the attention spans are very high and the person can receive new inputs easily.

Some scientific findings have stated that only about 5% of humanity is capable of being hypnotized, which is the third misconception on this list. The scientists are to some extent true in their own way, because they attempted hypnotising their subjects by the same hypnosis technique without acknowledging individual differences in nature and temperament. People differ in their natures and personalities, and thus there have to be different hypnosis methods to suit the temperaments of different individuals.

Meditation and hypnosis are usually thought to be the same by people. However, meditation is a purely personal experience that has got no involvement of communication, on the other hand communication is an integral part of any successful hypnosis. Trance too is not related to hypnosis at all. Trance is again a state of mind devoid of any communication, while communication forms the very basis of the hypnosis method.

Another misconception is that physical and behavioural alterations in an individual are not attainable through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis definitely cannot alter the body in unnatural ways. But it can bring about an improvement in physical health by changing behavioural patterns like overeating and constant smoking by raising motivation levels in an individual.

If a person believes in all the wrong notions that exist regarding hypnotherapy and doesn’t venture to participate in a hypnotic session, then he will himself block his way to a happier and healthier life.
